The speculation around The Game Awards was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team is likely crafting a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it kicked off the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—elements that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be solved in a variety of manners, often in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, players can look forward to another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
