Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.
Australia's chief selector the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Perth.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not only his injury, but further aspects," he commented.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.
He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.
Contingency Plans
In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.
All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
